Bear Baby Shower Ideas: The Complete Guide to the Aviator Bear and Hot Air Balloon Bear

A bear theme fits a baby shower, a first birthday or a baptism, and it never looks like a licensed character party. The easy way to make it yours is to pick one of two styles: the aviator bear, with goggles, a little plane and clouds, or the bear in a hot air balloon, softer and dreamier. Both share the same bear, so you can mix pieces. This guide covers colors, sayings, the dessert table, a DIY balloon, games, food and exactly what to print.

Aviator bear or hot air balloon bear?

  • Aviator bear. Leather cap and goggles, a propeller plane, clouds, maybe a map. It feels a little vintage. It also works as an "airplane baby shower" and, a year later, as a "time flies" first birthday.

  • Hot air balloon bear. The bear rides in the basket, surrounded by clouds and stars. Calm, works for any gender, and suits a baptism or a "baby is on the way" brunch.

  • Classic teddy bear. Just the bear and a "We can bearly wait" sign. It's the simplest, and it blends with either style.

You don't have to choose only one. Put the balloon bear on the cake and planes on the favors. What ties it together is the color palette.

Colors that work

Pick two main colors and one accent, and print on white or cream cardstock.

  • Sky blue, cream and caramel brown. The classic aviator look.

  • Sage green, cream and tan. Neutral, and good if you're keeping the baby's sex a surprise.

  • Dusty pink, cream and honey. Soft and warm for a baby girl.

The bear itself stays brown or tan in every palette, so the theme is still obvious even with pink or green.

Sayings for invitations and signs

  • "We can bearly wait" (the classic for a shower)

  • "Ready for takeoff"

  • "A little one is about to land"

  • "Our little bear is on the way"

  • "Time flies! [Name] is one" (first birthday)

Use one saying on the invitation and the welcome sign. More than that gets busy.

The dessert table, step by step

A 6-foot table against a plain wall gives you room for everything. Build it from the back to the front, so you never have to reach over the cake.

Dessert table layout: arched backdrop with clouds and a small plane, bear cake topper on a two-tier cake, favor boxes on the left, labeled candy jars on the right and hot air balloons hanging above
Build the table in this order: 1 backdrop, 2 cake and topper, 3 favor boxes, 4 labeled jars, 5 hanging balloons.

  1. Backdrop. An arch panel, a curtain or a sheet of kraft paper on the wall. Add a few paper clouds and one plane.

  2. Cake and topper. Center the cake on a stand so the bear topper sits at eye level.

  3. Favor boxes. Line them up on one side in odd numbers (3, 5, 7) and keep the rest in a basket under the table.

  4. Candy jars with labels. Three jars of different heights on the other side, each with a printed label.

  5. Hanging balloons. Two or three paper hot air balloons above the table, at slightly different heights.

Make a hot air balloon from a paper lantern

This is the piece guests photograph. It costs a few dollars and takes about 15 minutes.

Four steps to turn a paper lantern into a hot air balloon: round lantern, small box with a bear inside, four strings tying the box under the lantern, finished balloon hanging from the ceiling
A round paper lantern, a small box and four strings make a hot air balloon with a bear on board.

  1. Get a round paper lantern, 12 to 16 inches across, in white or one of your colors.

  2. Make the basket. Use an assembled favor box without its lid, or a paper cup. Put a small plush bear or a printed bear inside.

  3. Tie four strings of the same length (6 to 8 inches) from the lantern's bottom wire ring to the four corners of the basket. Equal lengths keep the basket level.

  4. Hang it from the ceiling with fishing line and a removable hook. Two strips of washi tape from top to bottom give it the look of balloon panels.

Never put a candle inside a paper lantern. If you want light, use a battery LED.

Games and activities

  • Wishes for baby. Guests write a wish on a printed tag and clip it to the balloon basket. You keep the tags afterward.

  • Flight log advice cards. Each guest fills in a card with advice for the new parents. Collect them in a box or a small album.

  • Guess the date and weight. One printed sheet near the door; whoever gets closest wins a favor box.

  • Baby bingo while gifts are opened, so guests stay engaged.

At a first birthday, swap the games for a photo line: one picture per month along a string, under a "Time flies" sign.

Food that fits the theme

Bears love honey, so lean into it:

  • Honey-butter popcorn in small cups

  • Sandwiches cut with a bear-shaped cookie cutter

  • "Cloud" cupcakes with a tall swirl of white frosting

  • Fruit cups with blueberries and banana

  • Lemonade labeled "jet fuel" or "balloon fuel"

One safety note: don't give honey in any form to a baby under 12 months. If the guest of honor is turning one, check with your pediatrician before the cake. Put a small label on every dish so guests with allergies can check at a glance.

What to print for about 20 guests

  • Invitation. A phone invitation sent by text saves postage and time. Here's how to set one up: Text Message Invitations: Edit on Your Phone and Send by Text.

  • Cake topper: 1, plus cupcake toppers for 24 cupcakes.

  • Favor boxes: 20, plus 2 spares for mistakes.

  • Water bottle labels: 20 to 24.

  • Food tent cards: 6 to 10, one per dish.

  • Welcome sign: 1, printed at Letter size or larger.

  • Wish tags or advice cards: 25.

Use 65 to 80 lb cover cardstock (about 176 to 216 g/m²) for boxes and toppers so they hold their shape. Regular printer paper or sticker paper is fine for bottle labels.

A simple timeline

  • 6 weeks before: choose the style and colors.

  • 4 to 5 weeks before: send invitations.

  • 1 week before: print everything and check the colors on one sheet first.

  • 2 or 3 evenings before: cut and assemble the favor boxes and the lantern balloon.

  • Party morning: fill the jars and set the table in the order above.

Budget tips

  • One themed kit costs less than buying each piece on its own. On our site, mixing 4 or more printables takes 10% off, and 8 or more takes 15%, applied automatically at checkout.

  • Print at home on one evening. Rather not print? Several of our sets are also available printed and shipped from Portugal.

  • Keep the files. The same bear works for the first birthday with a new name and date.

FAQ

Is a bear baby shower only for boys?

No. The bear is neutral. The palette decides the mood: blue for a boy, pink for a girl, sage or cream if you're keeping it a surprise.

Can I use the same set for the baby shower and the first birthday?

Yes. Keep the files and change the name, date and saying. Many families use the hot air balloon bear for both.

How far ahead should I print?

About a week before. That leaves time to reprint a sheet if the colors come out too dark.
